Absolute healthiest dry kitten/cat food?

Absolute healthiest dry kitten/cat food? Topic: Innova research

Question: I would prefer a brand that I can find at a pet store such as Petco or Petsmart because I cannot order online. I am feeding my kittens Nature's Variety Instinct Grain-Free canned cat food and Innova Cat & Kitten Canned Food as well as freeze dried beef and chicken patties and I leave out water of course. However, I am in search of a dry food because when I am at school I will not be at home to feed them canned food-which would go bad in the amount of time that I am at school. Currently I am feeding my kittens Innova Kitten Food but I want something better, healthier or the absolute best. You didn't read the details did you lol. There is a lot of unnecessary information in your answer and unnecessary questions.

Asking for the healthiest dry food to feed your cat is asking whether you should feed burger king mcdonalds or wendy's. Healthy and dry food is an oxymoron for cats. If you insist, the healthiest dry has no grains but I would rather feed the worst canned food over the best dry food. Canned food will not go bad in 1 day being out. Even when it hardens up it is ok and safe to eat Nutrition since there are so many bad things out there is very important to your cat’s health Contrary to what you may have heard; dry foods are not a great thing to feed a cat. Please read the label on what you are feeding? What are the ingredients? Do you know what they mean? Is the first ingredient a muscle meat like chicken or meal or other things? http://www.catinfo.org/#Learn_How_To_Rea... http://www.sniksnak.com/ac/petfooddefini... Dry foods are the number 1 cause of diabetes in cats as well as being a huge contributing factor to kidney disease, obesity, crystals, u.t.i’s, constipation, and a host of other problems. Male cats are especially prone to blockages from dry food. Food allergies are very common when feeding dry foods. Rashes, scabs behind the tail and on the chin are all symptoms The problems associated with Dry food is that they are loaded with grains and carbohydrates which many cats (carnivores) cannot process. ( Have a fat cat?) An even bigger problem is that it IS dry and it dehydrates no matter how much your cat drinks Most of the moisture a cat needs is suppose to be in the food. Cats are not naturally big drinkers. 95% of the moisture is zapped out of dry foods in the processing. Think about it. Another thing, most use horrible ingredients and don't use a muscle meat as the primary ingredient and use vegetable based protein versus animal. Not good for an animal that has to eat meat to survive. http://www.catinfo.org/#My_Cat_is_Doing_... You want to pick a canned food w/o gravy (gravy=carbs) that uses a muscle meat as the first ingredient and doesn't have corn at least in the first 3 ingredients if at all. I would rather feed a middle grade canned food then the top of the line dry food. Also, dry food is not proven to be better for teeth. The canned food might be a pain, but honestly it's way better than kibble. Dry food has now been assocaited with causing many medical issues. To answer your question, it's generally recommended to feed kitten food until 12 months. But you can feed your kitten adult cat canned food if it is a high quality food. The kitten formulas and commercial adult foods are full of fillers anyway and have little nutritional value for your cats. I wouldn‘t really recommend feeding any dry food. Cats are designed to get their water from food. That's the way nature designed them, they have low thirst drive. When fed dry, they won't drink enough to compensate for the lack of moisture. They will only consume about 50% of the water they should be having. This can lead to kidney disease, UTI, crystals, blockage, renal failure and more. Especially if you have a tom, this is crucial. Male cats have a narrower urethra than female cats and are more prone to blockage from the crystals. Free feeding also contributes to obesity. And the fact that dry food is over-processed means, that most of it’s little nutrition has been already destroyed, leaving almost no nutrients for your cat. It needs to eat more to meet it’s needs, and in the process consumes more calories from the fillers. Btw wetting the dry food will not help. There’s bacteria on the kibble and the water would just allow it to grow. The only way to give the cat it's natural hydration is to feed it wet food only. But some wet foods are not of a very high quality, either. That goes for most commercial foods. Just like the dry, they are often made with cheap fillers such as corn, wheat, soy, rice etc. These are not a part of cat's natural diet (it’s an obligate carnivore – it eats meat) and they are not designed to digest it. Grain is carbohydrate which the cats can't process and it turns into blood sugar and fat, causing diabetes and obesity. In the wild, where cats only hunt for meat, diabetes and obesity are unheard of. It's us who cause these by feeding a species inappropriate food. We usually read labels on our food, but rarely on the food for our cats. Learn to read the label and understand the ingredients. The healthiest food to feed apart from raw feeding is grain-free wet food with no by-product. Some good brands are Wellness CORE, EVO, Merrick, Nature's Variety, Blue Buffalo Wilderness and more. These will give your cat the proper hydration and nutrition it's designed to get and it will be strong and healthy. If you switch it's diet, do it gradually, by mixing the current food with the new one over couple of weeks until there's only the new. This will prevent diarrhea and upset stomach. You will probably get a lot of different answers, so google feline nutrition or look at the links below, and do the research for yourself. I personally wasn't able to find one reliable source (besides the pet food industry) that would say grain is beneficial for cats or that dry is beneficial for them. There's little or no difference between Kitten and Adult cat food. It should be written on the package but normally you should feed them Kitten food until they are 6 months old. Then again it's really not important, the difference is sooo small. I've nursed a lot of strayed abandoned kitties, and in emergencies when I had nothing I gave them quality adult canned cat food. Of course, remember to variate his diet with both dry food, kibble and canned. And don't give them too much milk because it gives them diarrhea! I know some cats who refuse to eat canned food and they only eat dry kibble, if this happens with him remember that it's very important to give some fresh water, that you should obviously change everyday, in a bowl for him.

The best ones are: Innova Evo Nature's Variety Instinct Serengeti Wellness Core (tho this one didn't agree with my cat) Merrick Before Grain Orijen Science Diet, Nutro, Purina, and many others have the carbs with lower protein and fillers and by-products. (chuckling at JC's reply which I didn't see until after I posted - my original post was much longer and I kept getting error messages until I had it whittled down to the above - first tried posting over an hour ago) (edited to add Serengeti and Orijen, which I had forgotten about)

I feed my four cats Nutro Natural Choice Indoor formula (available at PetSmart and Petco) and they all love it. It's a higher protein lower carb food that doesn't contain any chicken by-products and it's all natural. Nutro produces all their food in their own factories. They don't have other factories make their food for them. I'm a pet nutrition specialist with Nutro and have been feeding it for over 25 years to all my furry kids and it's always worked great. Here's a link to learn more about it and read some reviews. http://www.nutro.com/natural-cat-food/natural-choice-cat-food.aspx Good luck and hope this helps.

It's quite possible that the URI is still affecting her appetite. The URI affects their ability to smell, and that is what draws them to their food. That's why cats with this infection will often go off their feed. If they can't smell it, they probably won't eat it. However, it's still important that your kitty eat something. These growing critters need lots of calories to fuel their tiny bodies. Some of the tips I wrote about getting cats to try canned food may work for your kitten with its currently reduced sense of smell. From my blog: 1. Buy the best. See http://www.catinfo.org/commercialcannedf... for suggestions, and also see my blog on identifying good foods http://blog.360.yahoo.com/blog-ytgWjlI5e... Although you don't want to feed fishy foods more than 2-3 times per week (http://www.littlebigcat.com/index.php?ac... ), you might want to get a few. The stronger smell may be more appealing, and perhaps you could use it as a topping on other foods as well. 2. Buy as many varieties as you can. Get different brands and different flavors. Also try different textures - some prefer mushy food, others prefer ones that are chunkier. You just never know what's going to appeal to a cat. 3. Offer a teaspoonful or so of the new food in a separate bowl at feeding time. Do this at every meal. The idea is that kitty will finally realize it's food and will give it a shot. By offering just a small amount, you'll avoid digestive upsets should he or she be willing to give it a try. 4. If he tries any, note which brand/flavor it was. You may then want to focus on that brand or that flavor in other brands. But don't be fooled. The cat may eat it all up but then never want to eat it again. So before buying a case of a food that he seems to like, make sure he's going to continue going for it. 5. You can try putting a smear of food on his nose or mouth. That'll cause him to lick it. If he likes it, he may try more. 6. Bribes. Crush some kibble and sprinkle it over the top. Try fish or liver flakes, parmesan cheese, a drop of soy sauce, meaty baby food (with no added onion or garlic), whatever it takes. 7. You can run the food (in a container of course) under hot or warm water or even nuke it for a few seconds to bring it to "mouse body temperature." This may also release the scent and that may draw the cat in.
