What to do to keep my very smart 3 1/2 year old challenged?

What to do to keep my very smart 3 1/2 year old challenged? Topic: Old school writing alphabet

Question: I know everyone says their kid is smart when they are young and learning new things, so I was hesitant to acknowledge him being smarter than average. However, now his preschool teacher wants to put him in with the 5 year olds. Thing is, we are moving in about 2 months so he would be adjusting to new kids and teachers, he's only been in his current class 1 month so probably just getting adjusted to it. He knows every shape, color, letter and number. he can write the alphabet and numbers and his name. He can sound out simple words to read them. He has amazing drawing ability, can count to at least 30, can do nearly all the work in the kindergarden work book (simple math and early reading skills), and has a very broad vocabulary. His teacher says she can see he's very bored with her class. There is an entire year and a half before kindergarden and I just don't know what to do with him in this time before he can go to regular school. I work with him at home, but I'm a single mom and I work so there's only so much time for me to do that. I don't want him to get bored at school already. I don't know what else there is for me to do for him right now? Is it worth putting him in the class with the kindergardeners for the next 1 1/12 months?? Any any thoughts on whether private school is worth the money? I think saving those thousands a year for college would do him more benefit. Thoughts?

I am sure you are proud of your child, but chances are he is probably just advanced for his age---------- for now. Eventually he will be at the same level as many other kids. Pushing him in with older kids now will just socially stunt him. He may be academically advanced, but he physically and emotionally a 3 1/2 year old.

there are different ponds.. each one is bigger.. the high school pond has advanced classes, and while you are smart for being in those classes, so is everyone else, and the coursework is harder since it's advanced, so you're not going to get the grades you used to get unless you're the best of the best. it's not that you are getting less smart, it's just that everyone around is smart as well since the kids who were below you have been relegated to 'General' courses. this also continues in college, when everyone there is their high school valedictorian.. haha, now that was a dose of reality for me...

You are still smart. The variables that have changed are the fact that more people around you are just as smart and you are taking more challenging classes. Don't give up-your hard work will pay off. Often gifted people find that in elementary and middle school, the work is not as challenging. Yet when faced with the challenges presented in high school and college, they shut down. Don't let this happen. You are not alone. I suggest visiting the following websites: www.oagc.com & www.nagc.com Good luck!

Your son might do very well in a Montessori program where kids are allowed to advance at their own rate (they are not grouped up by ages like other preschools). Montessori Madness is an excellent book explaining the Montessori approach.

Uzziel Originally Answered: Can 20 year olds be as smart as 40 or 50 year olds?
Smarter yes, more experienced, no. Granted, this is based on the pretense that most 40 or 50 year olds have been around the block a few times, while most 20 year olds are just finishing High School and just starting their lives. Are their exceptions to this, yes. You may encounter a 40 or 50 year old individual that really hasn't had vary many life experiences outside of just "existing", while some 20 year olds may have done more and seen more than someone two or three times their age. I am 35. I joined the Navy right out of High School and I have seen and done a lot of things in my 17 year career. Even though I am a well educated individual (I hold two Masters Degrees), there is no doubt plenty of 20 something's who are academically "smarter" than me. It would be impossible for a 20 something to be more experienced. Hope, that helps

Your kind of right, different generations, they know more about the war, we know more about technology. My 76 yr old grandfather is on facebook and with it, but mobility poor, everyone different, just depends what you've experienced in your life :) love talking to the elderly though, they have some great knowledge and experiences but not always wiser or smarter with how things are now. They say we have it too easy, we say it's so much harder with stricter driving tests and exams etc.. from when they did it....
